Sentinel softball turns bat rack loose on Butte High

By Bruce Sayler
Sentinel High of Missoula inflicted noticeable damage with its bats Monday, sweeping a Class AA high school doubleheader from Butte High at Stodden Park.
The Spartans slugged four home runs while collecting 14 hits in a 12-2 victory over Butte High in the first game, one that counted in the Western AA Conference standings, ending it after five innings on the 10-run difference rule
Then, they pounded out 14 hits again and beat the Bulldogs 17-0 in a non-conference game finished by the 15-run difference, four-inning rule.
Seven Sentinel seniors put the charge into the Spartan lineup.
“In the first game, I thought we competed pretty well,” Butte High head coach Ryan Stosich said. “There were some positives in there. We went with them for five innings and then the wheels came off the bus.
“We had a big opportunity with the bases loaded and didn’t get the key hit we needed.”
The intensity lowered a bit for the second game with some different pitching and other position experiments.
The Bulldogs’ records stood at 2-12 overall and 2-9 in Western AA games after Monday’s contests. They will play a non-conference game at Eastern AA Bozeman High on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Then, they are to return home for a Thursday 5 p.m. conference game against Helena Capital.
Sentinel went to 10-5, 7-3 with the wins.

The Bulldogs had cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the bottom fourth inning and had the bases loaded with two out. Sentinel shortstop Haley Wolsky fielded a ground ball and stepped on second base for an inning-ending fielder’s choice and Butte High’s rally had been snuffed.
Senior pitcher Rian Ferriter had limited the hard-hitting Spartans to a run in each of the first three innings while her Butte High teammates tried to muster offensive support. Sentinel had scored in the first inning when Wolsky singled and came home when Stella Summerfield lined a base hit off Ferriter’s outstretched glove and into the outfield gap. In the second, it was back-to-back one-out doubles by Haley Sellers and Nina Sammoury that made it a 2-0 Sentinel lead. Then, Wolsky walloped a leadoff home run in the third.
The Spartans stranded two runners in each the third and the fourth innings as Bulldog center fielder Taylor Drakos made a lunging, diving catch and left fielder Ally Godbout flagged down a flyball at the fence to end each frame.
Rian Ferriter drew a walk to start the Butte High fourth inning and her sister, Gracie, followed with a single to center field. Rian Ferriter beat the throw to third base from the outfield while Gracie pulled up at second. Madisyn Swanson’s groundout brought home Rian Ferriter with the first Bulldog run. Ally Godbout then singled to left to bat in Gracie Ferriter. Rylee Crane replaced Charlee Hoover in the pitcher’s circle and Butte High’s Ashby Lee greeted her with a base hit to right field. After an infield popup, Taylor Drakos worked a base on balls to fill the bags. Then, Wolsky defused the threat with her force play at second.
The scare thrown into Sentinel also charged up the Spartans. They hit three home runs two by Hoover, in the top of the fifth while sending nine runs across the plate. Hoover’s first blast was with Emma Ries aboard via a hit by pitch and with no outs. Crane belted a two-run homer to left with one out and and Sellers on base by a walk. Ries later knocked in two runs with a sacks-packed single to left, just in front of Hoover’s three-run shot for her second home run of the inning.
Kamber Leary relieved Rian Ferriter after Sellers’ double.
Crane set the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the game was over on the run-difference rule.
Leary smacked a double and single to lead the Butte High hitting. Ashby Lee contributed a single to go with the base hits by Gracie Ferriter and Ally Godbout. Dacelyn Lafond returned to the lineup, playing right field, after being out two weeks with a shoulder injury.

Sentinel’s bats were warmed up and seemingly on auto pilot as the Spartans paraded to the plate. They pounded two home runs, a triple and five doubles in their four-inning, 14-hit attack.
Crane pitched three innings and Jayden Gagner one while holding the Bulldogs to two hits – a two-out single to right by Leary in the bottom of the third inning, and a leadoff double to Rian Ferriter in the fourth.
Sentinel performed a rarity in the first inning, scoring three runs on sacrifice flies to grab a 3-0 lead. The Spartans loaded the bases with no out when Gagner started with a walk, Wolsky bunted on and Summerfield walked. Ries then lofted a foul ball deep into the left field corner. Gracie Ferriter chased it down for the catch, but Gagner and Wolsky both raced home ahead of the relay to the infield. Hoover followed with a base on balls and then Morgan Olson sent a sacrifice fly to left. Sellers flied to right to end the inning.
A two-run double by Gagner and a two-run single by Summerfield increased the spread to 7-0 in the second inning. Wolsky knocked in two runs with a double in the third after a run-scoring double by Brooklyn Wright and an RBI infield hit by Gagner. The Spartans’ fifth run of the frame scored on an error.
In the fourth, Crane walked to lead off the frame and Nina Sammourty followed with a booming home run over the center field fence. An out later, Wolsky tripled, then scored on an error. After the second out, Hoover launched her third home run of the day, a three-run shot over the left field fence.
Olson and Sellers chained singles, but were stranded on base when Butte High reliever Bryn Godbout struck out Crane.
Leary had hit a two-out single in the third for Butte High and stolen second base. However, a strikeout left her there. Rian Ferriter was erased on a double play after leading off the Butte High fourth with her double to left field. Madisyn Swanson lined a sizzler that Sentinel second baseman Summerfield snagged, then threw to first before Ferriter could get back to the bag. After a walk, Gagner retired the side on a groundout and the game was over on the new 15-run rule. A 15-run difference after four innings ends the game unless the trailing team wishes to go another inning.
Sentinel’s Wolsky went 6-for-6 for the day with six runs scored, three batted in and a home run, triple and double counted among her hits.
