Sentinel JV takes pair of nail biters from Bulldogs

MISSOULA — Butte High’s junior varsity softball team dropped a pair of back-and-forth games to Missoula Sentinel Wednesday.

The Spartans squeaked out a 9-8 win in the opener before completing the sweep with a 7-5 win.

“We have been in a lot of close games,” Butte High coach Kelly Ferriter said. “Our pitchers are throwing good and we are hitting the ball, but miscues in the field keep tripping us up.  We girls are working hard to clean that up and once we do good things will happen, we will be able to close out these close games.”

Butte High is back in action Friday when they play host to Kalispell Flathead at 1 p.m.

The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the win.

Bryn Godbout pitched a completed game, striking out eight and walking two for the Bulldogs. She surrendered eight hits.

“She did a really good job of hitting her spots and keeping the hitters off balance by mixing her speeds up,” Ferriter said. “Natalie Lynch hit the ball hard all game and Kamber Leary made a spectacular diving play at third to get an out on a bunt attempt.”

Lynch and Taylor Drakos each smacked a pair of hits for Butte High. Leary, Kami Kautzman, Wisdom Hanninen, Dacelyn Lafond, Ashby Lee and Pieper Joseph each added one.

Lee scattered nine hits, struck out three and walked one for the Bulldogs.

“Wisdom Hanninen had an awesome diving catch in the outfield, and Pieper Joseph also made a great catch on a hard hit with her back against the fence,” Ferriter said. “Cami Kautzman hit her 1st career Homerun in a Bulldog uniform.”

Kautzman’s big fly highlighted a nine-hit attack by the Bulldogs. Lynch and Maddie Jonart each poked two hits. Drakos, Lafond, Hanninen and Lee each hit one.
