Sean Ferriter wins hammer throw at Tom Cage Classic

BOZEMAN — Sean “Diesel” Ferriter was at it again Friday.

The Butte Central graduate and Montana State senior won the hammer throw yet again, posting a mark of 63.44 meters to top the field at the Tom Cage Classic. Results

The victory is yet another in a long line of victories for Ferriter this season.

Butte High graduate Carly Haeffner, who transferred from the MSU-Northern volleyball team to MSU this school year, placed third in the high jump. The former Bulldog cleared 1.60 meters to tie teammate Jessica Chrisp. Maddie Taylor of UM cleared 1.65 meters for the win.

Also for MSU, Anaconda native Jacqueline Verlanic placed second in the women’s hammer throw, launching it 51.70 meters. Caitlyn Caraway of UM won with 54.64.

Grizzly freshman Erica McLeod, a Butte High graduate, had another big day Friday. McLeod placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and the long jump.

McLeod ran the 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 3.48 seconds. MSU’s Paige Squire won the race in 58.88 seconds. McLeod leaped a season-best 5.48 meters (17 feet, 11 3/4 inches) in the long jump. Bobcat Carly McCutchen leapt 5.89 for the victory.

UM senior Keli Dennehy, a distance runner from Butte, took the week off to rest heading into next week’s Big Sky Conference Championships in Cheney, Washington.
