School skating races scheduled for Saturday

The Butte Speedskating Club will host the annual School Races at the U.S. High Altitude Sports Center on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Races begin with 9:30 a.m., and they are a competition among the area elementary schools. The top three schools receive trophies.

Skaters are grouped by grade level and can use any type of skate, figure, hockey or speed skates. Any ability of skater is welcome to participate. Registrations can be picked up at the Sports Center prior to the race on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Fridays 6 to 9 p.m. or Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Forms will also be available at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the races.

The races are typically finished by 1:30 p.m., and there is no fee to race. The main objective of the race is to have fun.

The Butte Speedskating Club will also hold learn-to-skate sessions Tuesday and Thursday evenings, beginning this week at the Sports Center. The sessions are from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and will continue through the ice skating season, which is typically mid-to-late February.

There is no fee for the lessons, and skates are available for use during the lesson for lesson participants. All abilities are welcome.
