Sammi Bignell earns Frontier honor

Montana Western junior Sammi Bignell was named the Frontier Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today.

The 5-foot-10 junior from Avon helped the Bulldogs go 2-0 over the weekend. Western beat Montana State-Northern 75-49 and the University of Great Falls 65-50.

On the weekend, Bignell averaged 20 points, 9.5 rebounds, two assists and two

steals. She was 17 of 30 from the field, 3 of 6 in 3-point field goals and 3 of 3 from

the free throw line.

In the win over Great Falls, Bignell scored a career-high 34 points. That the third-highest single game total in Montana Western history.

Also nominated: Torrie Cahill of Carroll College, Annie Kane of Lewis-Clark State, Brittany Myers of Rocky Mountain College, Cydney Tibbitts of  Westminster College and Nikki Tresch of Montana State-Northern.


Marcel Towns of the University of Great Falls (UGF) was named the Frontier Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Towns is a 6-foot-2 junior guard from Tempe, Ariz. The Argos split two conference road games over the weekend, winning at No.18 Westminster College 73-71 and losing at Montana Western 59-71.

Towns averaged 29 points, six rebounds and two steals. He was 21 of 32 from the field, made 3 of 10, 3-point field goals and was 13 of 18 from the free throw line.

Against Westminster, Towns scored 43 points which broke a 42-year old UGF individual game scoring record.
