KEARNS, Utah — Butte swimmer Catherine Russo capped a highly-successful summer in the pool with a pair of victories, a meet record and a handful of Montana records last week at the Western Zone Championships.
Russo, a soon-to-be freshman at Butte High School, won the 100-yard butterfly in the girls’ 13-14 division. She tied for first in the 100 freestyle.
Her 100 butterfly race was particularly impressive as Russo set the Western Zone meet record with a time of 1 minute, 2.46 seconds. Her mark was also a state Zone record.
Russo’s time of 59.32 second in the 100 freestyle broke a Montana Zone record that had stood since 1984.
Another Montana Zone record fell in the 50 freestyle as Russo placed third in 27.34 seconds. In that race, just .10 seconds separated first through third place.
In the 200 freestyle preliminaries, Russo tied for eighth place in 2:16.10. She declined a swim-off for the championship finals in order to focus on the 100 butterfly finals in the evening.
Russo also competed in the 100 backstroke, and she found success swimming in four relays. Three of those relay teams set new Montana state Zone records.
She anchored the 4×50 freestyle relay team, which placed second in 1:51.59. Russo also anchored the 4×100 freestyle relay race, and her team placed seventh in 4:09.42.
The meet was held Aug. 10-13. Complete results
