Road warriors: Rocky men win Frontier title

DILLON — It’s starting to feel like 2009 all over again for the Rocky Mountain men’s basketball team.

Four years after the Battlin’ Bears made their run to a national title, Rocky is piling up wins at the right time again.

The Bears went on the road for their third straight playoff upset win Tuesday night. The latest victim to fall victim to the streaking Bears was Montana Western.

Malachi Roberts scored 18 points to lead three Rocky players in double figures as the Bears ran past the Bulldogs 68-52 in the Frontier Conference championship game at the Straugh Gymnasium.

Don Parham scored 11 points in the win, which was the fifth straight for the Rocky Men. Joel Barndt scored 11.

Jordan Overstreet came off the bench to score 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, who were playing without suspended Jake Owsley. Owsley, the Bulldogs’ leading scorer, was suspended for the title tilt because he was ejected in Western’s semifinal win over MSU-Northern.

Maazin Butler, Tyler Miller and Kris Collins each scored eight points in the loss.

Rocky earns the Frontier’s automatic berth in the national tournament. Western will undoubtedly advance to the tournament, too.
