Five young Rocky Mountain Martial Arts students traveled to Great Falls Saturday to compete in the Great Falls Electric City Taekwondo invitational championships held at CMR High School.
The tournament hosted by Grandmaster Scott Miranti of Big Sky Martial Arts of Great Falls took on sort of an international flavor with a couple of teams coming down from Canada and an individual from Ireland.
The 200 plus competitors could compete in sparring, poomse (forms) and tag team sparring was offered as well. The tag team fighting attracted a lot of competitors which extended by quite a bit the time the tournament lasted but it was a lot of fun to watch.
The RMMA students chose to compete in the traditional sparring and forms as everyone had to be about the same size and weight for tag team.
The RMMA team wanted the experience with some of them competing for the first time. They plan to compete the May 4 in Livingston and June 1 at the State Championships at the Montana Tech HPER Complex.
The RMMA team all had a fun time and competed well with all of them winning either gold silver or bronze. They were led by Montana Parker and Ethan McGillen — both winning a gold medal.
Place finishes were:
Montana Parker — Gold in poomse and bronze in sparring
Ethan McGillen — Gold in sparring
Kaden McGillen — Silver in sparring (Note: The McGillen brothers could not stay for poomse.)
Kaden Gardner — Bronze in sparring and poomse
Chase Nelson — Bronze in sparring and poomse
Next on the RMMA agenda a trip to Missoula to spar with our Missoula sister school the Missoula Taekwondo Academy.
Classes are offered six days a week at RMMA, at 322 Kennedy St. For more information, call 494-2754 go to the RMMA website or Facebook page or stop by.
