RMMA students place in Zootown

MISSOULA — A strong contingent of Rocky Mountain Martial Arts students participated in the inaugural Zootown Kickdown Taekwondo tournament at the University of Montana Adams Center.

The Zootown tournament, sponsored by Master Jake Parker and his wife Stacey, owners of the Missoula Taekwondo Academy, was very successful with 289 competitors for the inauguration of what promises to be a top tournament for years to come. The competition was also very strong that made for an exciting day for both parents and students.

The day started with an upbeat, positive and professional atmosphere right from the morning meeting of officials. Master Parker opened with an inspirational and professional talk on how the tournament would be run that set in motion a very fun and professional day. The event was strongly represented by Grandmasters and Masters from across the state and was sanctioned by the Montana Taekwondo Association.

The tournament also boasted some firsts with a new wireless scoring system called True Score and seemed to live up to its name, enabling a continual competition that kept the event moving. Add that to the addition of a fifth ring rather than the normal four ring setup the tournament was completed in almost record time.

The RMMA contingent consisted of very young or first-time competitors. Some had to battle injuries as well as being new to tournaments. All were standouts in their own right, but a couple had an extra burden. For instance, 8-year-old Lauren Powers winded up in the 9-year-old male division but fought her way to the bronze medal. Also Max Offult competed in a very highly-competitive division and also took home the bronze.

Next on the RMMA agenda will be a self-defense course for 19 employees of Pioneer Technology Services on Feb. 17.

RMMA will host the Montana State Taekwondo Championships June 1 at the Montana Tech HPER Complex. RMMA is inviting Master Jake Parker to officiate.
