BILLINGS – Butte High and Butte Central each advanced a wrestler to the finals at the Montana All-Class State Wrestling Tourney, as Bulldog Levi Renz will battle Billings West’s Koby Reyes for the 145-pound Class AA title and Maroon Clay Stillwagon will take on Trace Jones of Sidney for the 113-pound crown.
The final round is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at MetraPark Arena.
Stillwagon, who spent a total of 67 seconds on the mat during his two matches on Friday, needed only 1:22 to pin Mason Fetters of Columbia Falls. At the onset of the match, however, it didn’t look like it would be that easy. Fetters wrapped a head-and-arm on Stillwagon, throwing him to the mat, but the wiry Maroon junior kept his back off the mat and worked his head out of the hold. A minute later he had Fetters turned over and the referee slapped the mat.
Stillwagon, who holds a 33-4 record on the season, has never wrestled Jones of Sidney, who decisioned Logan Pleninger of Havre in the other semifinal match.
Renz’s strength is wrestling on his feet, and the Butte junior racked up four takedowns in his 11-6 decision over Gage Bentley of Great Falls. Renz scored a pair of strong takedowns and collected three near-fall points in the first period to take a comfortable 7-2 lead, though Bentley pushed throughout and kept Renz working.
Renz will wrestle for the 145-pound title 34 years after his father Tom Renz won the 145-pound title for Butte High in 1980. Tom Renz passed away in 2000, a victim of cancer.
He’ll face Reyes of Billings West, who earned a 3-1 decision over Renz in last week’s final in the Eastern AA Seeding meet in Butte. Reyes came back from a 5-3 deficit in the other semifinal to post a dramatic last-second pin of CMR’s Isaiah Yates.
The only other Mining City wrestler still in action is 195-pound Butte High junior Lee Cannon, who advanced to the consolation semifinals with a narrow 3-2 decision over Bozeman’s Cody Wiers.
In Saturday morning loser-out action, Butte High’s Tyler Vetter suffered a 9-3 defeat to Wyatt Gordon of Missoula Big Sky at 106 pounds, while Bulldog Andrew Anderson lost by the same margin to CMR’s Nick Grasseschi at 160 pounds.
Butte Central junior Zach Hart’s tourney came to an end as he dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Lyle Degen of Belgrade.
