Registration open for Montana Cup

Butte’s Piss & Moan Runners will host the 22nd annual Montana Cup cross-country meet at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site in Deer Lodge on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Butte hosts the meet only once every seven years. Runner registration is open now at www.montanacup.com/Info/RunnerInfo/registration.htm, and that is the only way to register.

The Montana Cup traditionally has offered an exploration of Montana’s magnificent open spaces, and scenic Grant-Kohrs Ranch fits that theme. The meet is a team event, which brings together runners representing each of Montana’s seven cities for competition, racing across country, for the glory of claiming a traveling trophy — the Montana Cup.

There are also individual awards junior, open, masters and senior divisions. Each runner must represent the city team that he or she lives in or nearest to. There is no limit on the number of runners who may represent each city, and all runners are invited. In the history of the event there have been finishers between 10 and 72 years of age.

The Montana Cup is composed of two races, one for males of all ages, and one for females. Males race first this year starting at noon, and females commence racing on the same course shortly after the males finish. The distance of the races will be from 5K to 8K — another tradition of the event is that the exact distance of the course is not revealed until race morning.

Until Oct. 17, the early registration fee is $27 including the price of one official Montana Cup team jersey, but the fee is only $12 for those who already own one of those jerseys. Starting Oct. 18, the fees go up by $10. Registration closes on Oct. 31, 36-hours before the event.
