MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Redbirds split a Pacific Coast League season-opening doubleheader with the Oklahoma City RedHawks Friday night.
With Butte native Rob Johnson catching the opener, the Redbirds won the opener 9-0. The former Butte Miner went 0 for 3 with a run scored.
He handled pitchers John Gast and Eduardo Sanchez. Gast struck out seven and walked three while giving up four hits in five innings. Sanchez gave up a hit, walked one and fanned one in two innings. Minor league doubleheaders go seven innings.
Johnson didn’t catch in the nightcap, which saw the Redbirds rally for four runs in the bottom of the seventh in an 8-7 loss. J.R. Towles caught the game and went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs. Starter Nick Greenwood gave up four runs in two and two thirds innings.
The teams continue the four-game series Saturday night.
