Records could fall as swimmers invade YMCA

Race officials are expecting 357 swimmers to be at the Butte Family YMCA Friday through Sunday for the 2015 Montana Swimming Short Course State Championships.

Butte coach Susan Huckeby said she is expecting big things during the prelim-finals meet hosted by the Butte Tarpons Swim Team.

“The pool looks great and I expect several state records to be broken this weekend,” Huckeby said. “This is a fast pool. The Tarpons appreciate all the support from the community to make this meet a success. We appreciate the hard work the YMCA has done to have the pool in championship ready condition for the meet.”

Sixteen teams will be represented along with several swimmers who are unattached. Unattached swimmers from Butte include Jake Bentley, Matt Ingersoll, and Zach Johnson. Also Keegan Whelan swims for the Helena Lions and Catherine Russo swims for the Bozeman Barracudas.

“Catherine is a swimmer to watch as she is really fast,” Huckeby said.

The Tarpons have five swimmers entered in the meet — 7-year-olds Caly and Lyla Skocilich; Xana Skocilich, 9, Zea Erickson, 10, and Grant Robins, 13. The four girls will join forces to swim 10-and-under relays (400 freestyle, 200 medley, and 200 free relays).

There is no charge to watch the meet, which begin at about 8:15 a.m. each day.
