Rangers top Maroons in four

Butte Central had some moments to build on Tuesday night on the volleyball court at the Maroon Activities Center.

The Maroons also had some they’d simply like to forget.

The Livingston Rangers took advantage of an inconsistent Butte Central squad to win the non-conference match, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-16.

“Overall we were pretty flat,” BC coach Kaila Minehan said of her team, which plays two more matches this week. “There wasn’t a lot of talking.”

With setter Shayla Pryor directing the action, Katie Buckley and Courtney Njardvik paced the hard-hitting Livingston attack. Buckley smacked 12 kills, while Njardvik chipped in with 10 kills and two stuff blocks.

“They’ve got a diverse offense,” Minehan said of the Rangers, who improved to 4-5 overall. “They spread the ball around and they dig. They took advantage of every overpass we had. Their middle blocker (Njardvik) killed us.”

Danee Leary had a big night to lead the Maroons. The senior outside hitter tallied 18 kills and five blocks to lead the Maroons, who fell to 2-2 overall.

“She’s hitting hard and when it’s in it’s awesome,” Minehan said of Leary. “She had some great blocks, too.”

Leary also collected 17 digs.

Mariah Cooney added 14 kills for the Maroons, while setters Shannon McLaughlin (19) and Taylor Marthaller (18) split the team’s assists evenly.

Danika Neumann, BC’s senior libero, collected 23 digs and served a pair of aces.

The Maroons, who played without defensive specialist Cassidy McGree, jump back into Southwestern A play Thursday when they head to Stevensville.

BC is home Saturday afternoon for a homecoming match against Corvallis.

Minehan said McGree, who was sick Tuesday, is expected back for those two matches.

“We’ve got a busy week,” Minehan said. “The good thing was this wasn’t a conference match.”
