BOZEMAN — Weather was the clear winner Tuesday as Butte High’s tennis team competed Monday.
The Bulldogs only saw partial action before rain washed out the rest of the schedule.
Butte High’s girls fell 5-3 to Helena Capital. The Bulldogs and Bruins only got in three boys matches before action was called. Capital won two of them.
A match with Helena was completely washed out.
Sierra McGinnis and McKaul Ori, Lexi Brandon and Molly Sprunger, and Bobby Vick and Katie Bennett all picked up doubles victories for the Butte High girls.
Butte High coach Mavis Bentley pointed out that her No. 1 doubles duo of Aidan Amtmann and Kaitlyn Vetter were much improved in their loss to Aran Hines and Meg Giddings.
“Kaitlyn and Aidan played a lot better and took Capital to 6-3, 7-5,” Bentley said. “Last time it was 6-0 and 6-2.”
McGinnis and Ori came back from an 0-3 hole in the second set to close out a victory with a 6-3 win. Bentley called Brandon and Sprunger “solid,” while pointing out that Vick and Bennett used good teamwork in their first match of the season.
Sophie Luetkens and Carlee Johnson were winning 5-3 in the second set when the rain came.
Capital won all four singles matches. “The girls played hard,” Bentley said.
Andy Kelly picked up Butte’s lone boys’ win, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory with “steady” play.
Bentley singled out the play of Tucker Reilly and Tanner Tregidga, who gave their Capital counterpart a “run for their money” in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.
Butte High’s teams are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Helena Invitational.
