Pirates top Maroons in softball opener

POLSON — Jessica Bagnell hit a double and a single while striking out seven Maroons Saturday afternoon to lead Polson to a 6-1 win over the Butte Central softball team.

Jaylin Kenney also doubled for the Pirates, the runners up in last year’s Class A State tournament. Kyrle Bitterman hit a pair of singles.

Sophomore Teresa Piazzola struck out eight batters for the Maroons in the losing effort. She gave up nine hits and walked five in the season opener.

Sophomore leadoff hitter Shawnee Hjelt doubled and drove in BC’s lone run, scoring Piazzola.

Freshman first baseman Mollie Peoples hit a pair of singles to begin her prep career. Seniors Rylee Green and Mikayla Boggs also singled for BC. Piazzola reached on a walk.

The Maroons followed the non-conference game against Polson by taking on Libby. That game was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
