Oredigger volleyball players sweep awards

The Montana Tech Oredigger volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-1 record and a sweep of the weekly conference awards. Bailie Cortner, Sabrina Hopcroft and Mackenzie Bauck were named Frontier Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, the league announced today.

Opening the season at the Biola Summer Slam, Montana Tech faced three opponents ranked in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll and one receiving votes. The Orediggers defeated (RV) The Master College 3-0 and No. 18 Southern Oregon 3-1 last Thursday. On Friday, Tech split losing to No. 16 Westmont and defeating No. 24 Northwestern (Iowa) 3-0.

Senior Bailie Cortner was named the Attacker of the Week. A 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Red Lodge had 36 kills on the week averaging 3.25 per set. She posted a .544 hitting percentage totaling just five errors in the four matches.

Freshman Sabrina Hopcroft was named the Defender of the Week. The Florence, Mont. native started her career averaging 3.92 digs per set and recorded an 89 percent serving percentage and an 88 percent passing percentage.

Senior Makenzie Bauck was named Setter of the Week. Bauck, also from Florence, averaged 9.2 assists and 1.4 digs per set.

Montana Tech hosts the third annual Big Sky Volleyball Challenge in Butte this weekend. In addition to the Diggers, 13 teams arrive in the Mining City for the two-day tournament. All matches are held at the Civic Center this year. First match on Friday is at 10 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
