Orediggers unveil 2014 football schedule

Montana Tech released its 2014 football schedule today. The schedule is quite different from the last two seasons with a current Frontier member departing the league and a new school coming into the fold.

Rather than two divisions like the past two seasons, the 10-game schedule was constructed without any regional affiliation, but each team still playing three schools twice.

Montana Tech opens its schedule much earlier than last season. University of Montana Western hosts the Orediggers on Aug. 23 at Vigilante Field for a night game. That is two weeks earlier than tech opened the season in 2013.

“We are excited to open the season with back-to-back night games,” Tech head coach Chuck Morrell said. “I think it will be a great experience to be down in Dillon on Aug. 23 as it will be one of, if not the first, collegiate football game played anywhere in the country next season.”

The home opener for the Orediggers is Aug. 30 against Montana State Northern with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.

The Orediggers return to a two-game showdown with rival Carroll College. The first of two meetings is in Helena on Sept. 13. Tech hosts the Saints on Oct. 25, Carroll’s first appearance on the Bob Green Field at Alumni Coliseum.

The other two schools Tech faces twice are Montana State Northern and Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers are the only team Tech continues to face more than once a year. The Eastern Oregon rivalry has been exciting in recent history with the teams splitting the last two seasons. The Orediggers host the Mountaineers on Sept. 20.

College of Idaho resurrected its football program after a 36-year absence and start play in the Frontier Conference in 2014. They are continuing their association with the Cascade Collegiate Conference for the rest of their sports. Tech heads to Caldwell on Sept. 27.

Dickinson State is out of the conference in all sports after just two seasons. The Blue Hawks will likely join the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA), a newly formed conference that includes schools from North and South Dakota. The Orediggers defeated Dickinson both times the two schools met.

Homecoming and other events have not been determined yet.
