Orediggers Survive Late Rally by Bears 85-80 in OT

BUTTE, Mont. – The Frontier Conference opener was a great example of the high level of competition in the league this season. Both nationally ranked, No. 7 Montana Tech survived No. 15 Rocky Mountain 85-80 in the league home opener.

Rocky (9-6, 0-1) finished the game with a 14-3 run and were up by three with less than a minute to go. The run started at the 5:49 mark with a layup from Jesse Owens who scored half seven of the 14 points to close out the game.

Keeley Bake had the game saving three. Bake hit a long ball in front of his own bench with just 21 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 70 and send the game into overtime.

The game stayed close in extra time. Rocky’s Kael Robinson tied the score at 80 after hittinmg two free throws with 1:45 to play.

On the next possession, Asa Williams knocked down a jumper right away putting Tech up 82-80.

After missed shots the Orediggers used the free throw line to seal the victory.

Williams hit a pair of free throws down the stretch finishing with 21 points. He also had gutsy play on the boards hauling in eight rebounds.

Michael Ure scored 13 of his 22 points in the first half. Ure went 10 for 15 from the field and 2 for 3 from long in the game.

The Orediggers led by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Bears gritted out a 15-6 run to finish the first half. Rocky had a 35-34 lead going into halftime.

The Orediggers shot 44% from the field in the game and knocked down 12 threes on 30 attempts. The free throw line was a sour spot hitting just 7 of 17 attempts.

Hayden Diekhans had 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Camdyn LaRance led thew Oredigger bench with 14 points hitting 3 of 4 three-point attempts. LaRance had 5 rebounds including 3 offensive boards and 5 assists.

Rocky shot 35.7% from the field and made 10 of 33 attempts from beyond the arc. The Bears led on the glass with 50-44 rebound advantage.

The Bears had only eight points from their bench while the Oredigger bench had 22 on the night.

AJ Wilson led Rocky with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Three Bears finished with double-doubles as four of their five starters played well over 30 minutes.

Maxim Stephens had 15 points and 16 rebounds. He spent most of his time on the free throw line going 9 for 14.

Owens had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Robinson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Orediggers travel to Havre next. The Montana State Northern Lights host the Orediggers this Thursday.
