WHITEFISH — Montana Tech’s football team was picked to finish in sixth place by the Frontier Conference coaches, the league announced today.
The selection, though, might not be quite the slight that it appears.
The Orediggers received a pair of first-place votes, and only 13 points separate Tech from league favorite Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers received three first-place votes and 39 overall points.
Montana Western and the College of Idaho tied for second at 36. COI received two first-place votes, while Western took home one. Carroll College is fourth at 33 points, and Southern Oregon is fifth at 30.
The Orediggers received 26 points, while Rocky Mountain and MSU-Northern followed at 15 and eight. Tech and Western did not play this spring, when Eastern Oregon, Carroll College and the College of Idaho tied for the title in a league of five teams. The College of Idaho won the 2019 title.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. First place was worth seven points, second place worth six points, third place worth five points, and so on.
