FULLERTON, Calif. — Montana Tech’s volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Hope International Summer Slam Thursday.
The Orediggers (3-1) fell 3-0 to No. 23 Westmont College (California) before battling back to take down Embry-Riddle (Arizona) in five sets.
Tech will host the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge next Thursday through Saturday at the Butte Civic Center.
Westmont College 3, Montana Tech 0 (Stats)
Westmont won 25-18, 25-22, 25-23, handing Tech its first loss of the season.
Karina Mickelson and Maureen Jessop each spiked 11 kills to lead the Orediggers, who hit just .093 at the net. Gena McMillan added six kills, Sabrina Hopcroft collected 21 digs. Mickelson collected 19 digs.
Montana Tech 3, Embry-Riddle 2
The Orediggers ended on a high note with the 25-16, 14-25, 25-18, 25-15 win over Emry-Riddle, which received votes in the preseason poll.
Tech capped the impressive showing at the season-opening tournament by hitting for a .196 mark at the net, registering 13 blocks, and holding Embry-Riddle to just a .081 hitting percentage.
Montana Tech was led by a trio of players registering double-digit kills in Michelson (12), Jessop (11) and McMillan (10).
McKenna Kaelber picked up 39 asssts, and Hopcroft registered 31 digs.
