Orediggers battle back for five-set victory at NAIA

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Montana Tech took a big step toward reaching the bracket portion of the NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship Tuesday, and the Orediggers did it the hard way.

The No. 15-ranked Orediggers battled back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off No. 7 Marian (Indiana) in five sets at the Tyson Events Center.

After losing 25-16 and 25-20, the Orediggers won 25-21, 25-13, 15-4. (Stats)

Tech (23-9) will close out pool play with a 6 p.m. match against No. 9 Midland (Nebraska). A win would assure the Orediggers of a berth in the final eight, which is a single-elimination tournament.

Karina Mickelson’s 21 kills led the Oredigger attack that outkilled Marian 61-50. Olivia Muir added 17 kills for Tech, which got nine from Maureen Jessop, seven from Sydney Parks and six from Taylor Henley.

McKenna Kaelber set 58 assists for the Orediggers. Sarah Hopcroft registered 14 digs to lead the Oredigger backcourt. Hannah Oggerino added 13.

Skyler Van Note’s 15 kills paced Marian (33-2). Michaela Hoffa added 11.
