Oredigger women edge Whitman in overtime

SPOKANE, Wash. — Montana Tech is heading home from the Whitworth Classic on a roll.

Mesa Williams scored 30 points, and fellow sophomore Mollie Peoples sank buzzer-beating jumper at the end of overtime as the Orediggers beat Whitman College 89-87 Saturday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse. (Stats)

Tech outscored Whitman 7-5 in overtime to run its record to 6-1 on the season.

The teams entered the extra stanza tied at 82 after the Blues outscored Tech 49-37 in the second half. Tech led 45-33 at halftime.

Williams, who hit on 11 of 17 shots from the field, was named tournament MVP after her career-high output in points. She scored 10 points in Friday’s win over host Whitworth University.

Kaylee Zard added 21 points and five rebounds. She earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

True freshman Dani Urick had another big game with 14 points.

Shay Potter added eight points and five boards for the Orediggers, who got seven from Celestina Faletoi, four from Sharlei Graham-Bernisto, three from Peoples and two from Hailey Crawford.

Mady Burdett scored 27 points, and Makana Stone tossed in 26 to lead the Blues (2-2).

The Orediggers are back on the road Tuesday. They play Salish Kootenai College at 5:30 p.m. in Pablo.
