Oredigger women dump host in tourney opener

SPOKANE — Montana Tech’s women’s basketball team opened the Whitworth Classic with a 68-52 victory over the host team Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. (Stats)

Tech saw four Orediggers score in double figures, and Tech outscored the Pirates 34-23 in the second half.

Mollie Peoples came off the bench to score 14 points to lead the Orediggers. Kaylee Zard and Dani Urick each scored 11 points, and Mesa Williams tossed in 10.

Zard also grabbed 13 rebounds in the win. Urick, a true freshman, grabbed nine boards collected four steals and dished out three assists.

The win also saw Shay Potter and Celestina Faletoi each score seven points. Lana Berg added four points for Tech, while Hailey Crawford and Sharlei Graham-Bernisto each scored two points.

Megan Dorney scored 16 points and Camy Aguinaldo scored 15 to lead Whitworth University.

The Orediggers close out the tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday against Whitman College.
