Old Works a challenge at Butte High tourney

ANACONDA — The course that Jack Nicklaus built held its own Thursday during a tournament hosted by Butte High.

The Old WOrks proved to be a bear on the windy day, pushing up scores for the first day of the two-day event. The Butte Country Club will host Friday’s final round.

Tricia Joyce and the Yelenich brothers of Butte Central highlighted the day for the Butte golfers. Joyce, a sophomore, shot an 89 and is tied for third place on the girls’ side. Tyge and Gator Yelenich each shot an 81 and are tied for seventh place on the boys’ side.

Tyge Yelenich is a junior, while Gator Yelenich is a freshman.

Logan Martin of Billings Skyview shot a 4-over-par 76 and sits atop the boys’ leaderboard. Billings West’s Joey Moore and Bozeman’s Payne Annala are tied for second at 78. Great Falls Russell’s Tucker Thomas and Great Falls High’s Rylan Periman are the only other boys to break 80. They are tied for fourth at 79.

Connor Mora of Great Falls High shot an 80, and the Bison led the team standings at 323. Bozeman is second at 333, followed by Skyview at 334, West at 334 and Butte High and CMR at 339.

Butte Central is seventh at 355.

Will Hoagland paced the Bulldogs with an 82. Also for Butte High, Houston Green shot 83, Marcus Lynch shot 85, Carston Quam carded an 89 and Isaiah Weldon hit 92.

Bryan Arnold added a 96 for the Maroons, who got a 97 from Cameron Johnson and a 135 from Colin Crase.

Bozeman’s Hannah Rosanova’s 80 leads the girls’ standings. Teammate Meggie Delaney is second at 89, and Bozeman’s Kameryn Basye is tied with Joyce for third at 89.

The Hawks lead the team standings at 348 (though they aren’t listed in the team scores). Great Falls High is second at 408, followed by West at 411, CMR at 450 and Butte High and Billings Senior at 468.

Sadie Starcevich shot a 108 to lead the Bulldogs, who were without No. 1 player Lexi Williams. Williams sat out with an illness.

Also for the Bulldogs, Grace Luoma shot a 112, Katelyn Alley hit 115 and Kelliann Neary carded a 133. Megan Michelotti hit a 126 for the Maroons.
