Nominations open for 2017 Hall of Fame class

Nominations for the Butte Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017 are now open.

For the first time, nominations can be made online at buttesports.com/butte-sports-hall-fame. They can also be submitted by filling out a paper nomination form. (Download nomination form here)

Nomination forms are available at the Butte Civic Center, Metals Sports Bar & Grill, Universal Athletics and Butte Broadcasting (KBOW, KOPR, Magic).

“We want to make the process as easy as possible for those making nominations as well as for the members of the selection committee,” Butte Sports Hall of Fame Executive Director Bill Foley said.

A public forum will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at the Metals Sports Bar & Grill. The forum will allow people to make a presentation on behalf of nominees in front of the selection committee.

“The public forum is an important part of the process,” Foley said. “I encourage everyone who submits a nomination to participate in the forum to make sure the candidate gets the proper recognition and consideration.”

Athletes who are 15 years or more removed from high school and are finished competing at their highest level of their sport are eligible for selection into the Hall. Categories are also available for head coaches, old timers (50 plus years) and contributors. Athletes nominated the last two selection processes (2015 and 2013) do not need to be re-nominated. Re-nominations, though, can be made for the purpose of providing more information on a nominee.

“I also encourage supporters of athletes previously nominated to participate in the public forum in January,” Foley said.

Foley stressed that it is not an insult to athletes if they are not selected the first time, or even the second or third time they are nominated.

“This is much different than the Baseball and Pro Football Hall of Fames where all players go on the ballot five years after retirement,” Foley said. “We are dealing with generations of remarkable athletes in the Mining City, and only so many athletes can be inducted each time. Hall of Fame-worthy athletes will eventually find their way in.”

Athletes must be nominated to be considered for the Butte Sports Hall of Fame, and nominations are due by Dec. 31.

The 2017 Class will mark the 30th anniversary of the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. The 2017 inductees will be named in February, and the Green Jacket and induction ceremonies will be held in June 2017.
