MISSOULA — Hailey Nielson had another big day Saturday.
This time, the Butte High runner blazed to first place in the girls’ A race at the Missoula Hellgate Quads at the Linda Vista Golf Course. (Results)
Nielson, who recently signed to run cross country and track at Montana Tech, won the 5-kilometer race with a season-best time 19 minutes, 36.99 seconds.
She beat second-place runner Brooke Stayner of Missoula Sentinel by 13 seconds. Sentinel’s Emma Nelson took third at 19:55. No other runner broke 20 minutes in the race
Sentinel won the girls A team title with 31 points, beating Helena Capital by 11. Kalispell Glacier ran to third at 69.
Butte High did not have enough varsity runners for a team score. Kyla Felix (22:25), Ida Real (23:29) and Pieper Joseph (23:45) also ran for the Bulldogs.
On the boys’ side, Bulldog sophomore Ryan Tomich had yet another personal-best time, finishing the boys’ A race in 18:22.
Tomich was one of three Bulldog boys to break 19 minutes in the race. Junior Brady Maloughney finished in 18:33, while sophomore Ladd Hutchinson finished in 18:34.
All seven Bulldog boys broke 20 minutes. Grant Smith (19:04), Cole Hunter (19:11), Trey Whitlock (19:32) and Cohwen Houchin (19:47) ran for the Bulldogs, who placed fourth out of four with 109 points.
Sentinel won the boys’ A title in with 18. Glacier took second at 59, two points better than Helena Capital.
The Bulldogs will head back to Missoula for a meet hosted by Sentinel next Friday. Butte High will host the Butte Invitational Oct. 2 at Stodden Park.
