Nielson wins 1,500 at weather-shortened meet

LAUREL — Wet weather shortened the Yellowjacket/Battlin’ Bear Open to just 15 completed events Saturday at the Laurel Sports Complex. (Results)

The meet, however, did go long enough for Montana Tech freshman Hailey Nielson to win the 1,500-meter race.

The Butte High graduate bested the field of 19 with a time of 4 minutes, 50.96 seconds. Reghan Worley of Carroll College took second at 4:54.76, and Mei-Li Stevens of Rocky Mountain College was third at 4:55.17.

Montana Tech’s were in fifth place 21 points after seven events when the meet was halted. Carroll led with 49 points.

Hailee Stiles placed fourth in the long jump for the Orediggers. Olleca Severson took fifth in the triple jump.

Dickinson State led the men’s race with 70 points. Montana Tech had three points through eight events.

The Oredigger teams will be back in action Thursday at the Providence Open in Great Falls.
