Nelson starts fast at Eastern Washington

The best scorer in Butte High basketball history is also doing pretty well in college.

Former Bulldog Lexie Nelson was one of six players named to the Cal Classic by Doubletree All-Tournament team over the weekend Nelson was honored after leading Eastern Washington to a 1-1 record in the Thanksgiving tournament in Berkeley, Calif.

The Eagles fell 91-58 to No. 11 California and beat Cal State Fullerton 50-45. Nelson averaged 10 points per game on the weekend. She also handed out four assists, grabbed three rebounds and collected one steal. She hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts.

Nelson scored a team-leading 15 points in Eastern s win over Cal State Fullerton, with 12 points coming from the free throw line. She played a game-high 34 minutes in that win.

The former Bulldog is Eastern Washington’s leading scorer, averaging 13 points per game. That ranks her in the top 10 in the Big Sky Conference. She started all five games and made 29 of 35 free throw attempts for the Eagles, who play the University of Idaho in Moscow tonight.

California’s Layshia Clarendon was tabbbed as the tournament MVP, while her teammates Talia Caldwell and Brittany Boyd, as well Georgetown’s Sugar Rogers and Andrea White were also included on the six-person All-Tournament team.

Nelson played for the University of Montana as a true freshman. She transferred to Eastern Washington after that season and redshirted last year.
