Nelson, Eagles bow out of Big Sky tourney

MISSOULA — Lexie Nelson’s first season with Eastern Washington ended in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tournament today at Dahlberg Arena.

The Eagles fell 68-64 in an overtime thriller to Northern Colorado to close the season at 19-12.

Eastern Washington scored the last eight points of regulation to send the game to overtime. Nelson hit a jumper before senior Carrie Ojeda scored to send the game to the extra frame.

Ojeda scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds before fouling out in overtime of her last collegiate game.

Nelson and Melissa Williams both scored 10 points for the Eagles. Nelson also dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds.

D’shara Strange scored 27 points to lead the Bears, who will play Montana or Sacramento State in the title game.

Nelson, a 2010 Butte High graduate, closed the season with a team-leading 14.3 points per game. The 5-foot-6 sophomore also averaged 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Nelson redshirted last season after transferring from the University of Montana, where she contributed in 2010-11 as a true freshman. Nelson is the leading scorer — boy or girl — in Butte High history.
