WHITEFISH — Natalee Faupel’s 2016-17 basketball season will begin the same way the 2015-16 season ended. With an MVP nod.

The Butte High graduate and MSU-Northern senior guard-forward was named the Frontier Conference Preseason Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, the league announced today.

The 5-foot-10 Faupel, who did not redshirt at Northern, was named the Frontier Conference MVP last season. She earned a spot on a pair of All-American teams after averaging 16.3 points per game to lead the Skylights to a run into the NAIA National Tournament.

Through three seasons for coach Chris Mouat’s Skylights, Faupel has registered 1,260 points, including 504 points last season when she was named Player of the Week four times. She scored at least 27 points in a game five times last season.

Northern teammate Jacy Thompson joined was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Other named to the squad where Cassidy Hashley of Carroll College, Nneka Nnadi of the University of Great Falls, and Brittany Tacker of Lewis-Clark State College.

Carroll College senior Zach Taylor is the Frontier Conference Preseason Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Shyke Smalls of Montana Western was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team along with Carroll’s Match Burnham and Ryan Imhoff, Rocky Mountain College’s Taylor Longo and Lewis-Clark-State’s Doug McDaniel.

The preseason all-conference teams were selected by the league’s coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
