Meg Murphy, a member of the Butte Sports Hall of Fame, will be a featured speaker at the 100th anniversary celebration of Butte Central athletics next month.
Murphy, a 1982 graduate at Butte Central, was an all-around athlete competing in basketball and track for the Maroons. Meg led Butte Central to three state championships in her playing days. She was a member of the 1981 and 1982 state championship Lady Maroons’ track teams.
Murphy was a first-team All-State player on the 1981 Lady Maroons’ state championship basketball team. Meg tallied 1,048 points in her basketball career. She was the first high school girl from Butte to score over 1,000 points in her career.
Murphy returned to Butte Central as a coach. She guided the Lady Maroons to three state softball titles in 1997, 1999 and 2000. Her last two title teams, in 1999 and 2000, went through the season undefeated, winning 52 straight games.
She also led the Lady Maroons to a state championship in basketball in 2011. Murphy joined John Frankino as the only individuals from Butte to win a state basketball championship as both a player and coach.
Murphy was inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
