I would like to congratulate the Butte Muckers on the win on Sunday night against the Missoula Mustangs. However, I have some questions about the pitching of the Butte Miners. I did the calculations on how many pitches Kolby Doherty threw. He faced 42 hitters in seven innings. Lets say that he threw 5 pitches to each batter (very unlikely but just an average per batter). That means that he threw 210 pitches in that game!! He threw between 120 and 210 pitches in the game. I’d like to know how many he really threw. It’s totally ridiculous to be throwing a younger kid that many pitches this early and to be honest its ridiculous to have any kid throw that many pitches anytime during the year. What does that matter though at least we got the WIN….

I’m no genius but if I follow the line down that says AB that would equal number of AT BATS, then if I take 94 and divide it by 36 I come up with 2.6 pitches per batter. That pitch count may be a bit high for this early but according to medical professionals it is in line with their research. There have been extensive studies by medical PROFESSIONALS who say a 14 to 16 year old kid can throw 95 pitches before needing 4 days rest, in my day 100 plus was normal for any kid.

I think a bigger issue is how some of these 9 to 12 teams who are playing on the weekend & then these kids are playing again during the week are monitoring the pitch counts of these very young kids. I’d be willing to bet we have 9 to 12 year old kids throwing 120 plus pitches during the week and that should never happen!
