AUSTIN, Texas — Deer Lodge native David Phillips placed 11th at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary meet Saturday at the University of Texas.
The Montana State athlete qualified for the NCAA Championships, which are June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore., with a throw of 63.66 meters. Teammate Grant Grosvenor placed ninth in the 800 to qualify for nationals.
“This was a huge day for David,” MSU head coach Dale Kennedy said. “He’s been a huge asset to our throwers since day one at MSU and for him to finally make it to the championship is a great way to end such a successful collegiate career.”
MSU’s Sean “Diesel” Ferriter, a Butte Central graduate, placed 40th in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.96.. Nick Miller of Oklahoma State won the event with a toss of 71.60.
Whitehall’s Kellee Glaus placed 22nd in the triple jump. The University of Montana athlete jumped 12.56 meters. Shanieka Thomas of San Diego State won with a mark of 14.07.
Butte High graduate Gwenn Abbott, also a Montana Grizzly, tied for 42nd place with a 1.65-meter high jump. Arizona’s Brigetta Barrett won by clearing 1.79.
