BOZEMAN — Montana State quarterback DeNarius McGhee earned First Team FCS Preseason All-America honors as selected by The Sports Network on Monday.
But the fourth-year Bobcat signal caller says the honor is as much for his teammates as it is for him. “It’s an honor, without a doubt,” said McGhee, already one of the most prolific passers in MSU and Big Sky Conference history. “But it’s all because of the guys around me. It’s a testament to the team.”
McGhee’s 9,116 passing yards is 1,630 from Travis Lulay’s Bobcat career record (10,746), and is just 1,581 from joining the league’s top 10 career mark. McGhee’s 10,001 career yards of total offense is second in school history, behind Lulay’s career mark of 12,205, which was also the second-best figure in Big Sky history.
But McGhee isn’t focused on records or statistics. For now, the 90-degree days that seem hot to long-time Montanans but “lovely” and “pretty warm” to the native of Mississippi who grew up in Texas mean only concentration in the process that leads to awards and records. “We’ve all put in a lot of hard work,” McGhee says of the hours he and his Bobcat teammates have logged in the weight room and in voluntary throwing workouts this summer.
And above all, the senior from Euless, Tex., knows that preseason awards are nice, but hold little meaning. “I haven’t done anything yet this year,” he says.
