MSU’s Choate adds Matt Miller, Byron Hout to staff

BOZEMAN — Jeff Choate filled a coaching staff position on each side of the line of scrimmage Tuesday with former Boise State players, including one noteworthy former Treasure State standout.

Matt Miller, the 2009 Montana Gatorade Player of the Year from Helena Capital, joins the Montana State staff as receivers coach. Byron Hout becomes the program’s defensive line coach. Each appointment is pending standard University background check.

A former Freshman All-America who played for conference championship teams in two different leagues, Miller began his coaching career in 2015 with a season as offensive quality control graduate assistant at his alma mater last fall. He worked with former Bobcat Junior Adams at BSU, assisting with daily duties such as video breakdown and game-planning. Miller was a four-year starter for the Broncos, earning 2nd Team All-Mountain West honors in 2012 while collecting MVP honors in the 2013 Hawai’i Bowl.

“Matt is a young man who I was involved in the recruiting process out of Helena Capital,” Choate said, “and he is one of the most productive wide receivers in Boise State history. He is a tremendous leader, is very detail-oriented, and is a person of great character with deep Montana ties. I feel like it is a slam dunk to get Matt back home to Montana State.”

Hout played on Boise State teams that compiled a cumulative records of 50-3 during his career, earning 2nd Team All-Mountain West honors in 2010 and honorable mention the next season, and he comes to MSU as defensive line coach. He played on two WAC and two Mountain West title teams for the Broncos. He worked as a defensive graduate assistant at Washington State in 2012 before returning to his alma mater in a similar role in 2013.

“Byron is another player I was involved in recruiting,” Choate said. “He played for me in my time at Boise State and was my graduate assistant at Washington State. He is a high-energy and extremely intelligent young coach with tremendous passion for the game. I know our young players in the defensive line are going to love playing for him.”
