MSU spikers drop pair in Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The Montana State volleyball team opened its season dropping a pair of matches at the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational, Friday afternoon. Idaho handed the Bobcats a 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 setback in the opener, before Drake defeated Montana State 25-16, 21-25, 28-26, 25-15 in the second match.

“We had a lot of inconsistencies,” said second-year head coach Kyle Weindel. “We got caught in the trap of being impatient and were taking unnecessary chances. We had a lot of unforced errors and were terminal- it was either a kill or an error.”

In the opening match, Idaho hit an impressive .398 from the field, while Montana State hit at a .176 clip and posting 22 hitting errors. The Vandals also held a 48-40 advantage in kills and a 7-3 edge in blocking.

MSU was led in the loss by two freshmen as Kennadie Clute and Loni Kreun each had a match-high 13 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Natalee Godfrey added six kills and two blocks.

Against Drake, the Bobcats had four players in double-digit kills, led by Kreun 15, Clute 14, Godfrey 12 and Eli Svisco 11. Kreun, an outside hitter from Davis, Calif., posted her first collegiate double-double adding 15 digs, while Clute, an outside hitter from Spokane, Wash., also notched a double with 13 digs. Libero Nicole Baker paced all Bobcats players with a team-high 17 digs.

For the match, MSU hit .135 from the floor, while the Bulldogs connected for .273 from the field. The Bobcats held a 54-47 edge in kills, but committed 33 errors.

Despite having four freshmen in its starting lineup and playing their first collegiate match, Weindel didn’t use opening day jitters as an excuse.

“We’re not using jitters, nervousness as an excuse,” Weindel said. “All of these kids have played in big matches. It doesn’t matter if it was 12-U or club nationals. They’ve all been in big games.”

Montana State will conclude play at Wyoming on Saturday against Stetson and the Cowgirls.
