MSU skiers lodge top-10 at NCAAs

PARK CITY, Utah — Bozeman High product Sawyer Kesselheim earned Second Team All-America honors in the Men’s 20k Freestyle on Saturday, helping lead Montana State to a ninth place finish at the 2014 NCAA Ski Championships.

Kesselheim, a sophomore, raced to All-America honors with a time of 44:01.70. David Norris finished 20th for MSU in that event, while Patrick Madden was 31st. In the women’s 15k freestyle, Anne Liotta finished 14th and Jessica Yeaton, who earned First Team All-America honors in the 5k classical race on Thursday, finished 15th. Kate Backstrum was 24th.

The downhill competition was also completed on Saturday after postponement of the slalom events on Friday. Ryan McConnell finished 25th to pace the MSU men, while David Owsley was 28th and David Neuhauser finished 30th. Kelly McBroom finished 16th to pace the MSU women, while Emily Danza was 18th and Stephanie Irwin was 22nd.

The MSU women’s teams combined to finish sixth among women’s teams at the event. Denver won the national championship with 556 points, while Vermont was second (487.5) and New Mexico third (458.5). MSU finished with 224.5 points.
