Holter second in high jump, Gelling third in discus
HAMILTON — Butte Central’s Ella Moodry, Kyle Holter and Riley Gelling will be flying high into the Class A State track meet.
Moodry, the defending state champion in the javelin, uncorked a career-best throw of 130 feet, 8 inches to capture the Western A Divisional title in the event Saturday. (Results)
Mya Winkler of Hamilton placed second in the event with a throw of 118-2. Moodry, a sophomore, qualified for the high jump on Friday.
Holter, a junior, cleared 6 feet, 2 inches to place second in the high jump. The height was 2 inches shy of his personal best.
Payton Cates of Ronan won the event with a PR of 6-7. Holter also qualified for State in the long jump on Friday.
Gelling launched the discus 141 feet, 2 inches for third place. He finished behind Hamilton’s Andrew Burrows at 166-7 and Dillon’s Callahan Hoffman at 151-3.
Butte Central freshman Sam Henderson qualified in the triple jump by placing 10th. He jumped 40 feet, 1 inch.
The top 10 individuals move on to State. BC’s 1,600-meter relay team placed 11th.
Central senior Kinley Hamilton placed seventh in the girls’ discus to qualify. She posted a mark of 105-2.
Whitefish won the girls’ team title with 123 points. Corvallis was second at 95, followed by Dillon at 86. Central scored 10 points.
BC star Rileigh McGree did not compete again Saturday because of an illness. She already qualified for State in the 100, long jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She is the defending state champion in the long jump and both hurdles.
Hamilton’s boys won with 118.5 points. Dillon was second at 105.5, and Frenchtown took third at 70. The Maroons scored 18 points for second.
The Class A State meet will run in conjunction with the Class AA meet Friday and Saturday on the Charlie Merrifield Track inside the Gene Fogarty Complex.
