Montana Western women’s hoops roundup

DILLON — The University of Montana Western women’s basketball had a tough weekend as they dropped their first two conference games of 2013. Starting on Jan. 3, the Bulldogs took to the road, traveling to Butte, Mont. to take on the Montana Tech Orediggers.

Even though the Bulldogs were effective containing Montana Tech’s leading scorer Kelsey DeWit and allowing her only three points on the night, Montana Western lost the contest 57-66.

Sammi Bignell led the Bulldogs with a double-double, netting 10 rebounds and 15 points. Brittney Leibenguth trailed with 13 points. Sophomore Jenna Banks also added nine points.

The Bulldogs then traveled to Lewiston, Idaho to take on Lewis and Clark State College. Montana Western could not seem to get into the flow of the game. A slow start in the beginning of the game and another slow start at halftime caused the Bulldogs to dig themselves into a deficit they could not bounce back from. Montana Western lost the contest 60-69.

Sammi Bignell had another big night and was one rebound short of posting another double-double effort. Bignell ended the night with 24 points and nine rebounds. Alecia Wilson chipped in 12 points and four assists while Jenna Banks added an eight-point effort.

The loss moves Montana Western to 8-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play so far.

The next conference game will take place this upcoming Thursday, Jan. 10 in the Straugh Gymnasium in Dillon, Mont. at 5:30 p.m. as the Bulldogs take on the Montana State University-Northern Skylights. On Saturday, Jan. 12, the University of Great Falls will also be traveling to Dillon to play Montana Western at 5:30 p.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium.
