Montana Western releases 2016 football schedule

DILLON — The University of Montana Western football team will start its 2016 season against former Frontier Conference member Dickinson State University on a neutral field in Miles City.

The opener is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. on Aug. 27. It will be the first time the two teams have squared since the Week 2 of the 2013 season — the Bulldogs won 55-14 — and running back Sam Rutherford rushed for a school-record 228 yards.

Following the Dickinson State game, the Bulldogs will travel to Caldwell, Idaho, to square off against the ‘Yotes from College of Idaho on Sept. 3. The two will meet again on Oct. 15 in Dillon for the Bulldogs’ Homecoming and Hall of Fame Game. Montana Western won both meetings in 2015 by a margin of four points, 24-20 in Dillon and 27-23 at College of Idaho.

Western’s home opener will be on Sept. 10 against Eastern Oregon and will be the annual Ag Appreciation Game, the Bulldogs won their only matchup with the Mountaineers last season, a 30-23 road victory.

On Sept. 17, Montana Western will return to the road to take on NAIA runners-up Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. The Red Raiders took the only meeting last season, a 37-30 overtime game in Dillon. The pair will play again on Oct. 29 at Vigilante Field for the Bulldogs’ Breast Cancer Awareness game.

After their longest road trip of the season, the Bulldogs will play host to Montana State University-Northern on Sept. 24, the game will coincide with the Bulldog Athletic Association Booster Bash Dinner & Auction. Montana Western did not allow an offensive touchdown in either matchup in 2015 as they dropped the Lights 44-2 and 52-6.

The Frontier Conference open week will follow the Bulldogs game against the Lights, the week of Sept. 31.

For the second season in a row, Montana Western will travel to rival Montana Tech, on Oct. 8. The ‘Diggers and the ‘Dawgs will square off on the Bob Green Field. In the only meeting last season, Tech scored a last minute touchdown to win 24-17.

The final home game of the 2016 campaign will on Nov. 5 as the Bulldogs will host Carroll College for Senior Day and their Salute to Service Game. The Saints were victorious in the only matchup last season, a 10-9 defensive battle at Vigilante Field.

The regular season will conclude with a game in Billings, Montana when Montana Western travels to Rocky Mountain College on Nov. 12. The Dawgs won both games last season, a 49-6 rout in Billings and a 27-26 barn-burner in Dillon.
