Montana Western men’s hoops roundup

DILLON — The University of Montana Western traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on two NCAA DII teams out of Colorado.  Friday, Nov. 2 saw a win over Western State and Saturday, Nov. 3 was a close loss to Fort Lewis.

On Friday, Maazin Butler’s 31 points and Jordan Overstreet’s 26 led the Bulldogs to a 92-74 victory over Western State. Jake Owsley chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Butler also had four assists and four steals while Kris Collins had four assists and three steals.

The Bulldogs came out strong and led 44-30 at the half. For the game, Montana Western shot 53 percent from the field, 44 percent behind the arc and 91 percent from the free throw line.

Western State was led by Terrence Boyd with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Bernard Webb had nine points and nine rebounds while Jordan Adams had 11 points.

Jordan Overstreet led all scorers with 19 in Saturday’s hard-fought 54-56 loss to Fort Lewis. Both teams scored 28 points in the second half as Fort Lewis’ 28-26 halftime lead made the difference.

Kris Colins contributed 10 points, four assists and three steals for the Bulldogs. Tyler Miller just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

Alex Herrera led Fort Lewis with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Matthews added 10 points followed by Matt Mazarei and Marcus Ayala with seven apiece.

Montana Western shot better from three-point land (36 percent) than they did from the field (30 percent) while Fort Lewis was 32 percent from the field and 17 percent on threes. There was not much difference in free throws as the Bulldogs were a dismal 57 percent (13-23) compared to 64 percent (14-22) for Fort Lewis.

Montana Western will be on the road again this weekend. They travel to Spokane, Wash. to take on Eastern Oregon and Corban University. Tip-off on Friday, Nov. 9 will be at 4 p.m. while the Saturday, Nov. 10 game will be at 10 a.m.
