Montana Tech cross country coach Zach Kughn ran to third place in the men’s open division of the Montana Cup Sunday in Butte.
Kughn finished the 4.7-mile race on the roads and trails behind Montana Tech in 25 minutes, 26 seconds. Adam Peterman of Missoula won the race in 24:11. Bozeman’s Tony Clement placed second in 25:40. (Results)
Missoula took home the men’s open team title. Kalispell placed second, followed by Bozeman, Helena and Butte.
Missoula also won the men’s master (40 plus) crown. Helena took second, Kalispell placed third, and Butte finished fourth.
Jason Delaney of Kalispell won the masters race in 26:47. Jesse Zentz of Helena was second at 27:56, and Aaron Derry of Missoula took third in 28:17.
Jennifer Lichter of Kalispell ran to the women’s title in 28:34. She beat second-place Erin Clark of Missoula by 11 seconds. Anna Dalton of Bozeman finished third in 28:49.
Bozeman won the team title. Missoula took second, and Butte finished third.
Whitehall’s Nicole Murray, who was running for the Butte team, placed fourth in the women’s masters division with a time of 32:07. Trisha Dorbeck of Missoula won in 30:15. Heather Lieberg of Helena placed second in 31:21 and Sara Graves of Billings took third in 31:47.
Helena won the women’s masters team title. Bozeman took second, and Butte finished third.
Sunday’s race marked the first time the Montana Cup was held in Butte since 2013.
