Montana Tech auction surpasses expectations

Digger Island was not only a huge success, it exceeded the hopes of the department. The annual Digger Athletic Association Auction featured an island theme with palm trees and student-athletes handing out leis. The festivities and great auction items put attendees in a giving mood.

“We were ecstatic about the turnout and enthusiasm at the event,” said Athletic Director Chuck Morrell.

More than 700 Digger fans packed the room at the HPER Complex Saturday. Over 50 live and 140 silent items went to winning bidders throughout the night.

“The Tech athletic department is extremely grateful for the support that we received from the Butte community, Digger Alumni and student-athlete families that all showed up for the auction.”

The funds raised go directly to student-athlete fees and scholarships, which was a theme in part of the live auction.

KBOW’s Paul Panisko, who emceed the event and calls Oredigger games on the radio, asked the avid crowd to give directly for one student-athlete’s fees and tuition during the live auction part of the evening. The cost for a student to attend Montana Tech for one year is about $1,500 in fees and $5,000 for tuition. While there was no winning bidder for the direct donation, numerous Digger fans gave to the student-athlete showing the generosity of Montana Tech supporters.

“A strong commitment level from our donors will allow us to continue to enhance student-athlete scholarships.  We have tremendous young people in our programs here at Tech that are working towards their degrees that will have major impacts on the world upon graduation.”

The Digger Athletic Association could not achieve success with their annual event without the help of their sponsors and contributors. Many of the sport and Tech themed items are created by alumni, student-athlete parents, Highlands College and the local community.

“We want to give special thanks to Ryan Lance and ConocoPhillips and Dale Markovich with Summit Beverage,” said Morrell. “An event like this does not happen without the support of our sponsors, alumni, the long list of contributors and donors, the Butte community, and student-athlete parents.”

In addition to ConocoPhillips and Summit Beverage, Digger Athletics thanks: Northwestern Energy, Steele’s Furniture, CCCS, St. James Healthcare, Harrington Pepsi, Montana Orthopedics, REC Silicon, Rocky Mountain Print Solutions, Anderson Zurmuehlen, Montana Tech Foundation, Best Western, Hampton Inn & Suites, JETCO, Glacier Bank and Markovich Construction.

“We have run several successful events this winter and spring and can’t wait to get out amongst the Digger faithful as we prepare for our fall sport season.”
