Mining City Duals renamed to honor Jim Street

The Mining City Duals will have a new name to honor a former coach.

Starting this December, the tournament will now be named “The Mining City Duals — Coach Jim Street Classic.”

Butte High announced the name change with a press release today. The school board approved of the renaming.

Street brought the duals wrestling tournament format to the state of Montana in 1989 after taking one of his prestigious teams to Hawaii in 1987 to participate in a duals format tournament.  Since that time, the duals format has grown throughout the State of Montana with all MHSA wrestling classifications using this type of format in some capacity during their respective wrestling seasons.

Chuck Merrifield, Vice-Principal and Activities Director at Butte High School stated,

“The Butte Wrestling Club and the Butte Athletic Council recently brought this idea forward as a means to honor Coach Street for all of his accomplishments as a legendary Wrestling Coach at Butte High School,” said Chuck Merrifield, Butte High’s vice-principal and activities director. “On behalf of the Butte School District and its Athletics Department, we feel it is fitting to pay tribute to Coach Street by tying his name to this outstanding wrestling tournament.”

Street had an outstanding and unparalleled record of accomplishment at Butte High School.  Under his leadership, Butte High won 13 straight Class AA State championships and 15 titles overall. Street was recognized as a 14 time Montana Class AA Wrestling Coach of the Year and a two-time National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year.

The Mining City Duals Wrestling Tournament is hosted by Butte High School and held each year in Butte. It showcases many of the top high school wrestling teams in the State of Montana. 1 comment
