HELENA — The Butte Miners and Helena Reps split a Southern A American Legion Doubleheader Wednesday night at Kindrick Legion Field.
The Miners won the opener 16-8. Helena stormed back to take the nightcap 9-3.
The Miners are now 4-2 in conference play. Butte and Helena will meet again Sunday, this time in a 1 p.m. twin bill in Butte.
Butte 16, Helena 8 (Box score)
The Miners took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth inning. They blew it open with seven in the seventh.
Casey Kautzman hit a three-run triple, scoring Ryan Burt, Even Starr, Kenley Leary in the fifth. Butte sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh. Kautzman, Peyton Hettick and Egan Lester singled in the frame.
In all, the Miners pounded 16 hits in the win.
Ryan Wahl hit a triple, while Burt and Hettick doubled. Hettick smacked four hits, while Wahl poked three. Kautzman, who entered the game as a relief pitcher, drove in five runs.
Egan Lester and Starr each picked to two singles, while Rylan Richards and Hunter Bugni each hit one.
Kautzman pitched four innings, giving up one run, to get the win.
Tyler Tenney doubled, and Matt Burton hit a pair of singles to lead the Reps. Burton and Joseph Hurlbert each drove in two runs, and Hunter Bratcher drew three walks.
Helena 9, Butte 3 (Box score)
Hurlbert, Helena’s No. 9 hitter, singled, stole second, took third on a Trysten Mooney single and scored on a single by Eamon Burke to break a 3-all tie in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Mooney stole home to make it 5-3 in favor of the home team. The Reps scored four insurance runs in the sixth.
Mooney went 3 for 4 and scored four runs. Burke added a double for Helena, while Victor Scott smacked two singles.
Joel Anderson pitched into the seventh to get the victory.
Hettick, Burt and Kian O’Neill each hit a pair of singles to lead the Miners. Aidan Lee, Reece Cox and Bugni hit one.
