FLORENCE — The Butte Miners opened the 2016 baseball season in style Sunday.

The Butte Class AA American Legion Baseball team swept the Bitterroot Bucks in a non-conference doubleheader. Butte won the opener 12-5 before completing the sweep with a 12-7 win in extra innings.

The games were a makeup of last Sunday’s rainouts. Next up for the Miners Is next Saturday’s home doubleheader with the Helena Senators.

Game 1
Butte Miners 12, Bitterroot Bucs 5
Quin Summers tripled, while Trey Berger and Braxton Henningsen doubled to lead Butte’s 11-hit attack in the opener.

Trey Hoagland went 3 for 4 with a pair of runs batted in, and Berger drove in three. Logan Lafromboise and Justin Summers added a pair of hits, while Renzy Doherty added one.

Hoagland struck out five and walked one in four innings to pick up the win. He scattered five hits. Kobe Doherty pitched three innings to close out the game.

Alex Gavlak doubled and singled, while Bo Zeiler and Brendan Bailey each hit two singles to lead the Bucs.

Hoagland hit a three-run triple to highlight a five-run 1oth inning as the Miners completed the sweep in the game scheduled for seven innings.

Renzy Doherty poked three hits in the win, including a double. Henningsen added a double and a single. Zach Hart, Dyllan Lane and Quin and Justin Summers each added a single in the victory.

Hart pitched five innings in relief to get the win. Starter Trey Berger fanned five and walked two in four innings.

Zeiler went 4 for 5 with a double to lead the Bucs.
