Miners miss out on state

The Butte Miners’ season is over.

Butte missed out on the Class AA state tournament, Miners coach Jeff LeProwse said late Saturday night. The state tournament begins Wednesday in Missoula.

LeProwse said the Miners finished in a three-way tie for the eighth and final spot in state with Bozeman and Great Falls. Bozeman won the tiebreaker.

Butte closed the season with a doubleheader loss Saturday at Kalispell. That closed the book on the season that saw the Miners finish third in a pair of tournaments before winning a tournament in Whitefish.

“We came up one game short, but I’m so proud of the way they competed this year,” LeProwse said of his team. “I’ve coached some of these seniors for eight years, and it’s tough to see them go. It’s hard for me to even think about it being over for them.”

The Miners will open their new stadium at Copper Mountain Park when the 2017 season opens next spring.
