Miners close out Braves

THREE FORKS — The Butte Miners started slow but finished fast Thursday afternoon at the Southern A District Tournament.

Butte scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish off the Livingston Braves 11-1. (Boxscore; Tournament bracket)

The win sends Butte to Friday’s 5 p.m. game against host Gallatin Valley. The Outlaws beat Helena 7-6 Thursday evening.

Livingston struck first when Casey Miller singled in Scott Tatum in the top of the first inning. Butte leadoff hitter Rylan Richards singled and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The Miners (27-14) took the lead with three runs in the fourth before putting the game away with the 10-run rule in the fifth.

Reece Cox pitched into the fourth inning to get the victory on the bump. Hunter Salcido got the final five outs.

Ryan Wahl went 3 for 4, and Kenley Leary hit a double and a single to drive in three to lead Butte’s 14-hit offensive. Richards and Coyt Stajcar hit doubles, and Richards, Leary, Egan Lester and Kian O’Neill each had a two-hit game. Aidan Lee and Eric Hart also singled in the win.

Stajcar knocked in two. Richards, Lester, Wahle, Lee and Zach Tierney each drove in one.

River Smith’s three singles led Livingston’s four-hit attack. The 5-29 Braves head to loser-out action.

The win was the fifth  for Butte over the Braves this season.
