Mellott, Bulldogs buck Broncs in double overtime

BILLINGS — What a way to end the regular season.

Junior Tommy Mellott came off the bench to score 27 points to lead the way Friday night as Butte High knocked off Billings Senior 72-65 in double overtime.

The win was Butte High’s first in Eastern AA play and sends the Bulldogs to next week’s Eastern AA Divisional tournament in Great Falls on a high note.

“Our kids are battle tested and have been through it all this season,” Bulldog coach Luke Powers said. “There is absolutely no quit in these boys.”

The game went to overtime tied at 55 because the Bulldogs were victim of yet another improbably buzzer-beating shot at the end of regulation. Austin Conway hit a fadeaway 3-pointer as the horn sounded to send the game to extra time.

The first overtime ended with a 59-all tie, and Butte High pulled away in the second extra stanza. Mellott’s 3-poitner to put the Bulldogs up five points was the big shot of the night.

Senior led 30-27 at halftime and 46-39 at the end of the third quarter. Butte High outscored the Broncs 16-9 in the fourth quarter.

Clay Ferguson and Jake Olson each scored 14 points for the Bulldogs, who close the regular season at 4-14 overall and 1-11 in conference. Kash Kelly scored eight points, while Trevyn Roth tossed in seven.

Jackson Burkley, who also came off the bench, scored 23 points to lead the Broncs (1-16, 1-10). Junior Bergen joined Conway with 12 points. Payton Turner scored 10.

Senior closes the regular season with a home game against Bozeman on Saturday. If Bozeman wins, Butte High will take the tiebreaker and the No. 6 seed in the divisional tournament.
